Along with the Verbal and Analytical Writing sections, the GRE features a Math Section
GRE Math Basics
GRE Math section consists of 28 questions which needs to be solved in 45 minutes. The topics quetsioned in the GRE Math section can be categorized as follows:
- GRE Arithmetic – It comprises of questions on arithmetic operations, percent, number theory etc.
- GRE Algebra – It comprises of questions on algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities etc.
- GRE Geometry – It comprises of questions on angles, triangles, co-oridnate geometry, lines etc.
- GRE Data – It comprises of questions on basic statistics such as mean, median, mode and standard deviation.
The 3 Major Types of Questions!
Regular Problems: These questions are regular math problems. They may be word problems or regular questions involving algebra, arithmetic or geometry. You will have to choose the correct answer of 5 options. There are approximately 10 of these questions.
Quantitative Comparison: You will be given 2 quantities and some information about them, and you’ll have to decide whether quantity A is greater than B, B is greater than A, whether both are equal, or if there isn’t enough information given to judge. There are about 14 comparison questions in the quantitative section.
Data Interpretation: These questions present you with a graph of some sort, and ask you to answer questions based on the data given by the graph. You’ll have to choose 1 of 5 possible answers. There will only be about 4-5 of these questions in the section.
Practice!
The sure-fire way to ace the GRE Math section is to practice. You must be comfortable with all of the 3 question-types and all 4 topics represented on the GRE. Remember, when you get only about 1.5 minutes per question, you need to be ready for anything, thinking fast and accurately.
